I may have cause to celebrate today, but I’m not ready to share that just yet. But it’s good news, a needed good news. And because of this, I’d like to celebrate a little. Nora’s sister will often post a photo on Facebook with the caption “Celebrating!” for different events. If I still posted on FB, I might be inclined to steal that from her.
But this raises the question of how to celebrate. I so infrequently do it that I’m not sure how. My upbringing and being an American, my first thought is to celebrate with food. A big meal, or dining out, or even a seldom eaten food. There are so many reasons this is a bad strategy.
- Food should not be a reward
- I am really watching the food I eat
- Food is temporary; I’ve never looked back on a meal eaten as memorable
To name a few.
I don’t drink alcohol; that’s another common activity for celebrating.
And let’s talk about how there are really no activities I would call fun for me. I can’t think of anything Nora and I could splurge on (in both money and time) that would be extra meaningful.
Is there a need to celebrate good things? Can it be enough to acknowledge them for being good and let them be? What’s with the need to mark events notably?
I dunno.
What do you do to celebrate?
