Part of this year of writing growth is going to have to be silly posts. Just a small nugget that requires me to brush the cobwebs off my imagination and try to complete a thought. Today’s entry for your pleasure…McIntosh apples are the best apple.

I’m making a concerted effort to eat more fruits and veggies. It started with eating some fruits and veggies. I was never one to really do so. Like most Americans, I’m sure, I was more likely to eat a fruit than a nasty, vile vegetable. Apples, oranges, a banana now and then, etc. But I fell victim to the pitfalls of fruits.

Bananas? Always too green or too ripe at the point of purchase. So I’d buy the green ones, thinking they would be perfect in a couple of days. After bringing them home, I would promptly forget about them until they were past even banana bread quality.

Red delicious apples? Do we really need to talk about this?

Grapes, cantaloupe, oranges? I couldn’t figure out how to buy them. It was forever a crap shoot, either the best or worst piece of fruit ever. I had no idea what I was doing.

I’m sure you all have tips and tricks you’d like to share on how and in what season to buy fruit. And I’m interested in hearing all about them. But let’s be honest, I’m going to forget all you offer when I’m standing in the produce section.

Enter the McIntosh apple. I contend that so long as it is bruise-free, you can’t go wrong. The taste is always amazing, it’s not meant to be crisp, so there is no letdown in that respect, and they seem to be moderately priced when you can find them. That’s the rub, though. Not all grocers carry them, and that is a shame. To date, I have never had one of these beauties and have not wished there was more of it when I got to the core.

Agree? Disagree? Bring it!
